A Garden-Party-Themed Wedding in Adams Morgan

Highlights include springy florals, sentimental pocket squares, and Pride-party-inspired Aperol spritzes.

Will and Patrick, attorneys from Virginia and Pennsylvania, respectively, met through mutual friends on a group trip to Rehoboth Beach for Memorial Day weekend. Will thought Patrick was handsome and intelligent, with the driest sense of humor. Patrick says his first impression was “Tall. Handsome. So funny. Sweet. In that order.”

At the time, Will was living in Washington, DC, and Patrick was in school in Philadelphia, so for their first official date, Will took the train to Philly, where Patrick took him on a “very detailed, very long” walking tour of the city. Five years later, Will proposed at the Jefferson Memorial overlooking the Tidal Basin, where he’d gotten Patrick to join him under the guise of a “friend photo shoot.” Patrick said yes, and Will had their friends waiting to celebrate with a Champagne toast back at home. About a year and a half later, they wed in front of 160 guests in a garden-party-themed wedding decorated in navy, hunter green, Aperol, and blush. Will’s favorite parts were the florals and lighting that he says contributed to the garden-party aesthetic in the reception space; Patrick’s favorite part was hosting the wedding in Adams Morgan, allowing them to share one of their favorite neighborhoods with loved ones. Among the special details were the grooms’ pocket squares, which were made of fabric from Will’s mother’s wedding dress; the stationery that incorporated a rowhouse motif drawn by one of Patrick’s dear friends; and toasts given by the first people to whom each groom came out. Other highlights included the DJ, whom the grooms say guests still rave about; Aperol spritzes that nodded to a Pride party the grooms throw each year; and espresso martinis that kept the party going. After the wedding, the newlyweds honeymooned in Thailand, Cambodia, and Turkey.
