Getting to know each other on a study-abroad program in Berlin, Emily and Christian discovered they’d attended the same middle and high schools. She thought he was “super sweet”—an impression formed in part by the teddy-bear sweatshirt he was wearing. (She later learned it was actually the Ralph Lauren bear.) Her warmth and humor, he says, drew him out of his shell. Six years after their first date, they got engaged.
A “vintage romance” theme helped create the grand escape-to-Europe vibe they wanted, carried out in shades of pink and red, with pops of green, navy, periwinkle, and gold. In addition to the venue, which they considered a mini stand-in for Versailles, Emily chose a Marie Antoinette–inspired gown and custom jewelry. Other highlights included the string trio that played modern music à la Bridgerton; an artist who painted a portrait for each guest; and centerpieces that included fruit and baguettes—nods to both the European aesthetic and Christian’s love of baking.
