This New Year’s Eve Wedding Is One of Our All-Time Favorites

The celebration at Maketto began with an intimate ceremony amid twinkly lights and candles in the courtyard.

Robyn and Luke met at a party before the Nationals’ World Series victory parade and then had a first date at a Robert Earl Keen show at the Lincoln Theatre. Three years later, Luke put together a scavenger hunt for Robyn that culminated with a proposal in the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden.

The couple exchanged vows just over six months later on New Year’s Eve. For the ceremony, 90 guests gathered amid twinkly lights and candles in the intimate, cozy courtyard at Maketto—a Michelin-recognized restaurant in their neighborhood. Indoors, the bride and groom filled display cases with mementos such as family photos and posters for concerts they’d attended together, along with bright, sunset-toned flowers that also lined the tables. In the background, Luke’s favorite movie, Cocktail, played on a small TV. The menu—a star of the celebration—included bao buns, scallion pancakes, dumplings, short ribs, wok-fried rice noodles, and Maketto’s fried chicken.
