The Winter Olympics wrapped up on Sunday with Team USA earning 33 medals—second to Norway’s total of 41. This year’s team included athletes from DC, Maryland, and Virginia, with many making their Olympic debuts in the Milano-Cortina Games.
Here’s a quick summary of how those athletes finished:
Ilia “Quad God” Malinin
Figure Skating
Malinin, a 21-year-old from Vienna who is redefining his sport with athletic quad jumps (and back flips!), was a prohibitive favorite to win gold in the individual men’s competition. Instead, the fan favorite fell twice during his freeskate, shocking spectators en route to an 8th place finish. He still won gold in the team mixed event, and also delivered an emotional exhibition gala performance.
Martin Fehérváry, Logan Thompson, and Tom Wilson
Ice Hockey
Washington Capitals players Thompson and Wilson earned sliver medals with the Canadian men’s team, which suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to Team USA in the gold medal game.Wilson contributed four points across six Olympics games—one goal and three assists. Thompson played in one game and stopped 24 out of 25 shots, according to Yahoo Sports.
Fehérváry finished fourth with Slovakia, which lost to Finland in the bronze medal game. That matched Slovakia’s best-ever finish in an Olympics featuring NHL players—but nevertheless, Fehérváry called it “the worst loss of my hockey career.”
Brandon Kim
Speed Skating
Kim, who grew up in Fairfax and is a student at Stanford University, had a busy first Olympics. He placed 8th in the 2000m mixed relay event, 15th in the 1500m, 29th in the 500m, and 31st in the 1000m.
Carsten Vissering
Bobsled
The Bethesda-raised Vissering, a former high-level college swimmer, attended his first Olympic Games in Milan and placed 11th in the four-man competition.
Bryan Sosoo
Bobsled
Another first-time Olympian and former college athlete (track and field), Sosoo placed 12th in the four-man competition.
Mystique Ro
Skeleton
A Nokesville, Virginia native and yet another former college athlete (track and field), Ro finished 7th in the mixed team competition, and 15th in the individual event.
Kamryn Lute
Short Track Speedskating
Born in New York, Lute is a member of the Dominion Speedskating Club in Springfield. She finished 8th in the 3000m relay semifinals and 23rd in the 1500m quarterfinals.
Conor McDermott-Mostowy
Speed Skating
The DC native and first-time Olympian made history as the Winter Games’ first out gay male speedskater. He placed 9th in the 1000m, and said that participating in the race was “the greatest honor of my life.”
Up next? The Paralympics, which begin March 6 in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy. Local sled hockey athletes Noah Grove (Frederick) and Evan Nichols (Haymarket) will be competing.
