When the Commanders’ season kicks off September 13, fans might notice a new furry teammate: TJ, a lab puppy who recently became the team’s official dog. Here’s a look at some canines cheering on our sports teams.
TJ / Washington Commanders
Born in March, the yellow Lab is training with the Maryland nonprofit Warrior Canine Connection to be-come a service dog for veterans. He’ll attend select home games this season as well as community events and engagements with members of the military. When his training is done, he’ll move into a full-time service role.
Natty / Washington Nationals
The puppy, who was named by fans in a poll, is spending a year with the Nats while learning to be a service dog. A mix of golden retriever and Lab, he’ll be spending time around the ballpark to learn cues and build confidence before heading off to official training.
Jack the Bulldog / Georgetown University
A bulldog mascot has been a staple at Georgetown since 1962, representing the Hoyas at games throughout the year. The current Jack is a three-year-old who has shown up at basketball games wearing a jersey, a shark costume, and other outfits.
José / Washington Spirit
After a slow start to the season, the team finally scored their first victory at an away game in California. During that trip, their temporary practice field had faux coyotes set up to scare away geese, and they’ve now adopted a similar plastic animal, named José, as a morale booster for what’s turned into a winning season.
