Athletes will head to Italy for the 2026 Winter Olympics, held in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo February 6 through 22. Here’s a look at some competitors with local ties.

Ilia Malinin

Figure Skating

The two-time world champion and “Quad God” from Vienna has already found fame as the first skater to stick not one, not two, but seven quadruple jumps in a single routine, earning a record-breaking score.

Martin Fehérváry, Logan Thompson, Tom Wilson

Ice Hockey

Two Washington Capitals stars are repping Canada on the world stage: Torontonian Wilson and Calgary-born goalie Thompson. Their defenseman teammate Fehérváry will play for his native Slovakia.

Brandon Kim

Speed Skating

Hailing from Fairfax, Kim is an alum of Thomas Jefferson High School and the Potomac Speedskating Club. After narrowly missing the 2022 games, he’ll make his Olympic debut in the short-track category.

Conor McDermott-Mostowy

Speed Skating

The native Washingtonian got into the sport as a kid when he saw someone speed-skating across the frozen C&O Canal and wanted to try it himself.
