A DC attorney recently launched a podcast, Off the Top, that features engaging interviews with bald men. It’s worth a listen even if you’re not a member of the bare-headed club.

The Host

The podcast was created by Justin Wm. Moyer, a longtime reporter for the Washington Post who got a law degree in his spare time and now is a lawyer doing a clerkship with a DC judge. He’s also a fixture of the city’s music scene, currently playing in the band Light Beams.

The Goal

Though the topic is baldness, Off the Top should appeal to anyone who feels self-conscious about aspects of their appearance—which is more or less everybody. For Moyer, the idea is mostly to feel better about his own hair loss. “I know logically it’s silly to think about this so much, but emotionally I don’t feel okay with it yet,” he says. “It’s been 20 years, so I’ve got to try to address this: ‘Let’s talk about it, let’s surface these issues. Do other people feel the same way?’ ”

The Podcast

Moyer’s been mulling over a show like this since he started losing his hair. “It’s a dramatic thing to go bald,” he says, “and nobody really talks about it. I just want to see what people think about it.” The first episode features a candid, vulnerable conversation with Craig Wedren of DC punk greats Shudder to Think. “In the end, it was somewhat enlightening and encouraging to hear that he is okay with it,” Moyer says. “It’s not something he worries about anymore.” As Wedren puts it in the interview, “I’m at peace with my pate.”
