Looking for something to do this weekend? These great day trips are within a two-hour drive of DC.
Putter around the Washington Channel in electric boats you can drive without a boating license. Sea Suite Cruises, the group that operates Whitlow’s on Water and the tiki barges, has two options that launch from docks at the Wharf: 10-person Duffy powerboats with an awning for some shade and retro mid-century vessels that fit up to four people. The vintage boats are from the late 50s to early 60s and look straight out of a James Bond film, painted crimson red or powder blue. For another option at the Wharf, GoBoat offers electric boats for up to eight people. Drivers for both outfitters must be at least 21 years old, and dock staff will provide a tutelage on how to start, steer, and stop.
All the aforementioned boating experiences are bring-your-own food and drink so you can enjoy a picnic on the water. The Wharf offers a buffet of nearby options for takeout. Grab deli sandwiches and cheesesteaks from Grazie Grazie, thin crust pizza from Union Pie, or hit Colada Shop for a spread of empanadas and croquetas. If you prefer to dine on land, keep the nautical theme going at shucking spots such as Hank’s Oyster Bar and Rappahannock Oyster Bar.
