Celebrate Summer Solstice at These Fun Events Around DC

Late-night museum parties, outdoor yoga, a music festival, and more ways to welcome summer.

Summer solstice, the official start of the season and longest day of the year, is happening on Sunday, June 21. If you’re looking to celebrate the celestial event, here’s where to go this weekend. 

Smithsonian Solstice Saturday

When: Friday, June 19 and Sunday, June 20 (times vary by location) 

Where: Multiple locations 

Price: Free

The Smithsonian is celebrating the solstice with extended hours. On Friday and Saturday, museums on the National Mall will keep their doors open until 11 PM. Festivities include special events, tours, performances, music, food and drinks. Dance to DJ sets at the National Museum of African Art or drop by the salsa-themed dance party at the American History Museum. Away from the mall, institutions such as the National Portrait Gallery and National Zoo are also participating. Some museums require pre-registration. 

Solstice Bike Ride

When: Saturday, June 20 from 10 AM to 11:30 AM 

Where: 1901 Fort Pl., SE 

Price: Free

The Washington Area Bicyclist Association is commemorating the solstice with a community bike ride through Ward 8, starting at the Anacostia Community Museum. Riders must register in advance.

Fête de la Musique

When: Saturday, June 20 from 4 PM to 8 PM

Where: Multiple locations in Georgetown 

Price: Free

Georgetown and the French Embassy are hosting this festival inspired by France’s 40-year solstice tradition. From orchestral music to EDM, find 30 performances across 13 locations. Attendees will also have the chance to receive discounts from participating businesses. 

Solstice Forest Bathing

When: Sunday, June 21 from 9 AM to 11 AM 

Where: 3501 New York Ave., NE

Price: $35

If you’re looking to touch grass, head to the National Arboretum for a forest-bathing session led by a nature and forest therapy guide. Participants must be over 16.

Union Station Yoga

When: Sunday, June 21 from 10 AM to 2 PM

Where: 50 Massachusetts Ave., NE 

Price: Starting at $7.18 

Wellness group Blind Seed is holding yoga and sound bath sessions at Union Station to honor the celestial event and International Day of Yoga. There will be guided breathwork accompanied by the cello, chair yoga designed for commuters, and a yoga workshop for inflexible folks. 

Witchy Solstice Party

When: Wednesday, June 24 at 7 pm

Where: 2801 8th St., NE

Price: Free Entry

A few days after the solstice, Brookland bar Dew Drop Inn is celebrating summer with maypole dancing, tarot card readings, arts, crafts, and more.
