Just ahead of World Elephant Day, the National Zoo is hosting EleFest, three days of activities dedicated to all things elephants. Festivities run from Friday, August 7 through Sunday August 9, and the schedule includes yoga with the herd, dance performances, and an elephant-themed story time. It’s also a very good excuse to visit baby elephant Linh Mai.
Adults can toast the baby elephant on Friday during a happy hour from 4 PM to 6:30 PM. (You must be at least 21 to attend.) The event includes a free elephant-themed cocktail, a live DJ, and wildlife trivia. You can also see Linh Mai without a crowd of kids. Tickets are $25 per person in advance and $30 day-of.
If you’re an early riser, practice yoga poses alongside the herd on Saturday and Sunday morning. (Downward elephant, anyone?) The 45-minute sessions will take place at 7 AM and 8 AM, and participants must be 12 years or older. Bring-your-own yoga mat and water bottle, though a complimentary elephant towel will be provided. Tickets are $75 and must be purchased in advance.
There are also several free events throughout the weekend. On Saturday, Somapa Thai Dance Group will perform traditional Thai dances, and DC Public Library will offer elephant-themed story times for the zoo’s younger visitors. On Sunday, Rhythmaya Dance Group will showcase traditional South Indian dances and lead workshops, and revelers can also take part in a community chalk mural led by art group Chalk Riot.
Tickets for paid events are currently available to zoo members and will open up to non-members on June 16. To access the free events, simply secure an entry pass to the zoo on that day.
