About Perfect Saturdays
Looking for something to do this weekend? These great day trips are within a two-hour drive of DC.
Strawberry season is wrapping up, so this weekend is likely your last opportunity to harvest the fruit.
Germantown, Maryland
Drive time from DC: 45 minutes.
This weekend, Butler’s Orchard is hosting Strawberry Festival, a celebration of the ruby treasures. Pick strawberries ($5 a person plus $7 for a container) and then spend some time enjoying the festival activities. There will be live music, a jump pad, corn hole, big slides, and more. The farm’s usual lineup of animals will also be in attendance, and kids can watch the goats walk along their plank. Tickets are $13.50 a person online and $15 at the entrance.
Once you’ve given the strawberry its moment, stop by the Farmer’s Porch Kitchen for casual fare—pulled pork sandwiches, pizza, hot dogs—as well as products from the farm. For a variety of options to mix and match, the Lancaster County Dutch Market is open Friday through Saturday, featuring Pennsylvania vendors selling cheese, doughnuts, and homemade salads. Take your finds five minutes away to Germantown Square Urban Park, a small, sub-acre plot with picnic tables and a grassy area. The market is also home to Dutch Family Restaurant, a sit-down spot serving pancakes in the morning, cheesesteaks for lunch, and chicken pot pie at dinner.
