9 Exciting Ways to Celebrate Fourth of July Around DC

The America 250 excitement continues through July as the country marks Independence Day. You can watch a grand fireworks show from the National Mall, attend a spirited parade in Downtown DC, or toast America’s birthday at a rooftop party. Here are some great ways to celebrate July 4 around DC:

 

Independence Day with the Nationals

Get a sneak peak of Independence Day sparkles at Nats Park on July 3. Our home team takes on the Pittsburgh Pirates that day, and fans can catch a postgame fireworks show at the stadium ($26+).

 

A Capitol Fourth Concert

A lineup of musicians will ring in the country’s birthday with a concert on the West Lawn of the US Capitol. This year’s performers include concert ensembles such as Patrick Lundy and the Ministers of Music, The Choral Arts Society of Washington, and classical conductor Jack Everly. You can attend the music showcase in person, or watch the PBS broadcast (free).

 

Interfaith Service Celebrating USA at 250

There’s a pre-Independence Day interfaith service at Washington National Cathedral. The spiritual gathering includes scripture, readings, live music, and more to honor the theme “We Hold These Truths to Be Self-Evident.” The service can be attended in-person or virtually (free).

 

National Independence Day Parade

Don your red, white, and blue, and head to Constitution Avenue for the National Independence Day Parade marking the country’s 250th birthday. Beginning at 10:30 AM, the patriotic morning stroll will take place along Constitution Avenue from 3rd Street, NW, to Independence Avenue at 12th Street, SW. Expect to see parade floats, military units, fife and drum corps, marching bands, and drill teams. To skip the parade crowds, you can catch a virtual replay of the parade  (free).

 

Willard Ardbeg BBQ Classic

Attend a bbq block party in style at Willard Intercontinental. The all-day affair will serve eats for purchase from a Ardbeg smoker trailer alongside hotdogs, hamburgers, cocktails, and ice pops. Plus, DJ Greg will keep the party entertained with live tunes (free entry).

 

July Fourth Backyard Barbecue

A grilling station, oyster bar, ice cream, and seasonal side dishes will be served at Salamander Washington DC to commemorate Independence Day. The spirited meal will take place on the hotel’s luxe Grand Lawn overlooking the Washington Marina. The family-friendly evening includes activities for kids, carnival-inspired treats such as cotton candy, and artisan popcorn ($165+ for adults, $89 for children ages 5 to 12).

Reading of the Declaration of Independence

Year-round visitors to the National Archives can learn about the Declaration of Independence, of course. But every Fourth of July, museum-goers get to listen in on a reading of the historic document by Founding Father reenactors, as well as live music performances. This year’s celebration goes all out for America 250 with face painting, airbrush tattoos, balloon twisters, and performances by the US Army 3rd Infantry Old Guard and the Fife and Drum Corps. After the outdoor fun, families can head inside the museum to tour exhibits and go on a scavenger hunt (free).

 

Salute to America 250 Celebration & Fireworks

This year’s Salute to America 250 promises to be the largest-ever fireworks display. The start time has yet to be announced, but guests heading down to the National Mall should plan to enter the viewing area from 14th Street between Constitution and Independence (free, registration encouraged).
