What People Are Saying About Those Crazy July 4 Metro Lines

WMATA says they set a July 4 ridership record.

If waiting until midnight for fireworks wasn’t festive enough on July 4, many spectators across the city were stuck outside into the wee hours of the morning waiting for the Metro. With free rides available across the city, many stations were in a gridlock as trains simply could not keep up with the amount of passengers waiting to get home from the fireworks and festivities. WMATA tells us that this year set a July 4 ridership record, with their preliminary count finding that 667,652 passengers rode the Metro that day.

When you’re stuck in line, there’s often nothing better to do than scroll. These spectators shared their thoughts from lines, stations, trains, and (hopefully) their beds later that night.

As this user put it, “the fireworks were unforgettable… but so was the trip home.”

Some long-haulers launched into the National Anthem.

One user said that the crowds should be used as proof lest the “fake news” tries to claim people weren’t watching the fireworks.

This user took us inside the actual trains, where the situation wasn’t much better.

ABC7’s Transportation reporter Tom Roussey was there all night, documenting his experience in this thread.

This TikTok plays on the “Saxophones getting louder” trend by showing what metro stations looked like late night.

Even at 2 AM, things had far from cleared up.

Even once people got inside, many trains couldn’t take passengers because they were totally full.

@jessicastarsinspace It was so hot and crowded I geniunely thought I was gonna pass out and fall right onto the tracks💀🫩😭 #dc #fourthofjuly #dcfireworks #fireworks #metro ♬ Saxophones getting louder – Sped Up – AntonioVivald

Some are writing reminders to their future selves to not endure this again.

@wilkin_cruz That was a mistake. So crowded and the metro man never again. #4thofjuly #dc #metro #fireworks #250thanniversary ♬ son original – three shots 🇹🇷🇬🇳
