Where to Get a Free Meal Around DC During the Government Shutdown

Restaurants are offering food to furloughed workers and those receiving SNAP benefits

The popular hoagie spot, which recently relocated to NoMa, will offer free soup and chips to all furloughed workers throughout November.

China Chilcano

This Peruvian restaurant from José Andrés in Penn Quarter is serving federal employees with valid ID free donburi bowls for lunch from 11:30 AM to 3 PM on weekdays.

Compass Coffee
Multiple locations
Furloughed federal employees with government ID can get a free drink and free food item once per day at all local cafes.

Medium Rare
3500 Connecticut Ave., NW
The steak frites restaurant will provide free lunch for those receiving SNAP or EBT card benefits and their families at its Cleveland Park location from 11:30 AM to 1:30 on Monday, Nov. 10. The restaurant will also feed those in need at its locations in Houston, Boston, and Dallas.

Moby Dick House of Kabob

All locations of this kabob chain are offering free lunch sandwiches to federal employees with valid ID on weekdays from 11 AM to 2 PM.

Providencia

Pastry chef Paola Velez is hosting a free community pastry pickup with brownies, cookies, and other sweet treats for furloughed federal employees and anyone who uses SNAP on Saturday, Nov. 8 from 10 AM to 12 PM. No purchase is necessary, but register in advance for a pickup time.

José Andrés’s humanitarian group is providing free lunch to federal employees and their families daily from 11 AM to 1 PM at Canal Park in Navy Yard at at the US Navy Memorial Plaza (in front of the National Archives).
