Westover Taco is no longer just a spot for tacos in Arlington. Under new ownership, the restaurant has also become the first sports bar dedicated to women’s sports in the DC area.
“I think it’s the right time, I think it’s the right space, I think it’s the right place,” says owner Sarah White, whose previously operated Cowboy Cafe and Lost Dog Cafe and helped co-found Westover Tacos back in the winter of 2023. When the most recent owners decided to sell the taco and margarita spot, White stepped in to become the sole owner, making it 100-percent woman-owned.
White says she is “rarely seen without a jersey” and wanted a place where women’s teams like the Washington Spirit and the DMV Queens, a professional women’s tackle football team, were given the spotlight. While there are DC establishments that regularly show women’s sports, including As You Are in Capitol Hill, White found there wasn’t a dedicated women’s sports bar in the area.
White says the bar has already helped regulars discover the D.C. Divas, a women’s football team. The restaurant also plans on supporting local girl’s and women’s sports, beyond the professional teams. Her message for local women’s sports teams: “Come to me and tell me that you need support, you need new uniforms, you need new whatever. Let’s get it done and that’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to be writing checks to help them get what they need for their seasons.”
The menu will continue to focus on Mexican food, but expect some additions. New starters include a sampler of guacamole, salsa, queso with chips for $12 and yucca cheese bites for $10. New platters ($18.99 to $31.99) range from local mahi mahi (grilled, blackened, or fried) to chimichurri-marinated skirt steak to “al pastor de Westover” with grilled pineapple rings. For dessert, find fried ice cream in collaboration with Toby’s Homemade Ice Cream next door and strawberry shortcake made of churros. The menu also features many vegan options, such as the new Southwest mushroom steak platter or mushroom fajitas.
A remodel of the restaurant includes the addition of four more TVs as well as women’s sports paraphernalia, including a neon blue sign reading “#WatchWomenWin.” Signed team jerseys from the D.C. Divas and professional women’s frisbee team, DC Shadow Ultimate, will also be added to the wall.
Westover Taco is open Monday through Thursday from 11 AM to 10 PM, Friday from 11 AM to 12 PM, and Saturday from 10 AM to 12 AM, and Sunday 10 AM to 10 PM.
