Brand Recognition

When Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement this summer over social media, it wasn’t just Swift’s ring finger that fans zoomed in on. The online watch marketplace Chrono24 told WatchPro magazine that searches for her timepiece–a diamond-studded yellow-gold number that turned out to be a Cartier “Santos Demoiselle”–surged by 2,000 percent over the next two days.

Here in DC, Tiny Jewel Box’s Matthew Rosenheim says the shop has seen more inquiries, too: “It generated a lot of interest, that’s for sure. People definitely wanted and still want that watch.”

Alas, Swift’s model is no longer in production, but Rosenheim says Cartier’s “Santos-Dumont” line (above) and “Panthère de Cartier” share a similar look.

Even before the Swift mania, interest in Cartier watches had been trending up. While celebrities such as Michelle Obama and Meghan Markle sport Cartier watches, Rosenheim says the brand hasn’t always gotten the credit it deserves as a watchmaker among collectors. But that’s been changing–adding to the appeal and demand. “Cartier has been on fire for a good period of time,” he says. And for now, it seems, the Taylor Swift effect is fanning the flames.
