Best of Washington: Hoop Dreams

Hula Hoops have been a staple of backyards and playgrounds, but now they’re swirling around—in adult sizes and with adult price tags—in fitness rooms as the latest fad to help people forget they’re actually exercising.

Although the hoops are a full-fledged trend in Hollywood, only a few places in the Washington area offer classes. Some locations of Bally Total Fitness (ballyfitness.com) offer Cardio Hoop classes. And a new Bethesda studio, Goddess Fitness (4931-B St. Elmo Ave.; 301-654-2007; goddessfitness.com), offers a five-week weighted-Hula-Hoop class for $125.

You can also start “hooping” at home. Several online sites offer hoops and DVDs, including Hoopnotica (hoopnotica.com), where decorative hoops run about $45. All you need is a childlike spirit—and a little coordination.
